Have you made your New Year's resolution? If you're like most people, you're vowing to lose weight, get fit, cut back on alcohol and quit smoking. And if you're like most people, your good intentions will last only about three weeks and then you'll slip back into your old routines.
The number one mistake people make when setting fitness goals is they set goals that are not realistic. If it took you a year to put on 25 pounds, then they won't come off overnight. If you try to go for a quick fix, such as a medical weight loss plan, you'll lose some fat, but you'll also lose a lot of muscle and water. Worse, the results often are not sustainable. Once you go back to your old habits, the pounds come back with a vengeance!
So this year, start a program with realistic goals and don't get discouraged if you don't hit them as fast as you would like. We tell all of our clients not to stress about weight loss, but rather fat loss. Since muscle weighs more than fat, you can't focus on the scale. Instead, focus on the number of inches you're losing, and how you look and feel as you shrink down to a smaller dress size.
